- Smiles all round from the children of Our
Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children who were the
very special passengers on Aer Arann’s annual
Children’s Christmas Flight. Santa Claus gave the
reindeers a day off and flew with the children to
Blackpool where he met everyone is his Grotto and gave
out loads of presents donated by Aer Arann Staff.
Sky Handling Partner was delighted to support the
children’s flight again this year by providing
ground handling services free of charge and Blackpool
Airport built a special Grotto for Santa and made sure
the children had plenty of goodies for lunch!

| Aer Arann announces another
new UK route |
03rd December
- Arann has announced that it is to launch a
new route from Dublin to Blackpool in January. This
announcement comes hot on the heels of the confirmation
of the airline’s new route from the Isle of Man
to London City.
“The strength of Aer Arann is our
ability, as people become more discerning about how
they spend their money on air travel, to provide easy
and direct access to regional airports with a desirable
high-quality product at affordable prices”, said
CEO Designate Paul Schütz.
“We said when we were announcing
our winter schedule that we will be continuing to
develop new routes wherever we see an opportunity to
strengthen our position as a leading regional
carrier”, Mr. Schütz continued.
“This announcement confirms that policy and
underlines our commitment to provide essential air
services that link regional airports with major urban
centre’s”, he continued.
Blackpool airport is the regional airport for
Lancashire and Cumbria and as the gateway to the North
West of England it is ideally placed for everything the
region has to offer. Excellent transport links put the
region's major towns and cities, its countryside and
its golden sands within easy reach.
David Kershaw, Chief Executive at Blackpool
International said: “Dublin is a key market for
us in terms of inbound and outbound passengers and we
will work very closely with the tourist boards both
here and in Ireland to ensure the unique resort that is
Blackpool as well as the great places to visit across
Lancashire and the Lake District are showcased as much
as possible.”
The new service also offers excellent opportunities
for inward tourism from the north west of England to
Ireland, with access to the Capital as well as onward
connections from Dublin on Aer Arann services to 6
Irish airports.
Aer Arann will be operating a fleet of ATR
Turboprops, giving passengers the highest standards of
onboard comfort as well as being environmentally sound.
The ATR 72-500 has indeed been dubbed ‘the
world’s greenest aircraft’.
The first flight will depart on Monday 5th January,
2009. Introductory fares on the daily service will
start at just €39.99 one way inclusive of taxes
and charges.

| Aer Arann completes review of
operations. Jobs saved - some route changes |
27th November
- Up to 30 positions, primarily among flight
crew and cabin crew, which were scheduled for
redundancy, will now be retained with the creation of a
new Isle of Man base to serve the Isle of Man to London
City route announced this week.
It has now been confirmed that the total number of
redundancies will be limited to 70. Aer Arann had
expected to make up to 100 staff redundant but the
airline signalled its intent to seek new charter and
contract lease business in an attempt to reduce that
number.
“This retention of jobs is a welcome immediate
result to a sustained effort to implement a dynamic new
business model and a strategy that reflects the economy
generally and an aviation industry globally that is
under severe pressure” said Aer Arann CEO
designate Paul Schütz
The continuing focus on the airline’s contract
lease business and the new Isle of Man development will
allow Aer Arann to retain a core fleet of 11 aircraft
on scheduled services and 1 aircraft on contract lease.
This is a significant improvement on the anticipated
fleet reduction although some aircraft will be
redeployed and the number of aircraft based in Cork and
Galway will reduce by one in each airport. However a
new base will be opened on the Isle of Man and an ATR
72-500 will be located there.
“We will continue to focus our efforts on
niche routes linking the regions with major urban
centres where we can build passenger numbers by
offering a reliable, cost effective and quality service
to both business and leisure travellers”, Paul
Schütz continued.
Aer Arann will be introducing schedule changes in
the New Year which will concentrate its operations on
routes that continue to perform well. These changes,
effective from January 12th, will see services on some
routes cut back or suspended. The airline is also
opening new routes where it has identified specific
business opportunities.
“Route reductions like this are normal for the
winter schedule”, explained Paul Schütz,
“and while the cuts may be a little deeper in
these recessionary times routes that are suspended will
be kept under review and may return in the future when
the demand is there to support them”.
“We will also continue to seek new route
opportunities so that we can strengthen our position as
a leading regional carrier”, Paul Schütz
continued.
Key points of today’s
announcement
• Expected redundancies reduced by 30%
• New Isle of Man base and London City route
• More new route announcements expected
• No change to services between Dublin and Galway,
Donegal, Derry, Sligo or Knock.
• Moderate fleet reduction and redeployment
• Three routes suspended
• No permanent route cancellations –
Suspended routes will be reviewed in 2009
• Some schedule timing changes to the winter
operation – to be reviewed in 2009
“The significant point from today’s
announcement is that we have limited the impact on
jobs, on the fleet reduction and on route
suspensions”, said Paul Schütz.
“We will now implement our new business plan
and mix the deployment of our fleet over the contract
lease and charter market. We will also develop our
scheduled routes to the maximum potential, addressing
the need for a service that is not being provided by
the larger carriers”, Paul Schütz concluded.
New Route Effective January 19th
2009
• Isle of Man - London City
Suspended Routes Effective January 12th
• Galway/Waterford - Amsterdam
• Kerry - Manchester
• Cork-Glasgow - Prestwick
- Some services around the Heineken Cup Final and
Six Nations Rugby will be operated.
Schedule Changes Effective January 12th
• Cork - Dublin
• Cork - Cardiff
• Galway - London Luton
• Galway - Manchester
• Galway - Edinburgh
• Waterford - Birmingham
• Waterford - Manchester
All other current Aer Arann routes remain
unchanged.
Seasonal routes scheduled to return in the Summer
Schedule include flights from Galway, Waterford and
Cork to Lorient and from Cork to Nantes, La Rochelle,
Jersey and Southampton. Other possible summer routes
are being examined.

| Aer Arann debut at London
City on Isle of Man route |
24th November
- Irish regional airline Aer Arann will be a
new airline at London City Airport when it commences
scheduled air services from the Isle of Man on 19
January, 2009. The Dublin-based carrier will operate
three times daily flights with its latest, 72-seat
new-generation ATR72-500 aircraft, pending
certification. The move restores one of the most
important air services for the Island and gives a
massive boost to the Isle of Man’s finance
sector. “From the start of next year, regular
flights will be available to London’s premier
business airport, less than four miles from
London’s commercial and financial heartland at
Canary Wharf,” commented Isle of Man Airport
Director Ann Reynolds.
The Island has retained just one flight a day to
City Airport (operated by VLM) since the closure of the
airline, EuroManx, in May this year. Aer Arann’s
announcement restores the weekday frequency to four
daily flights and, critically for the Island’s
business sector, provides the much missed morning and
evening services, enabling Isle of Man travellers a
full day’s work in the Capital. The first flight
from the Island will depart at 08:25, arriving at
London City at 09:50. The return evening flight allows
almost 10 hours in London, departing at 19:45 and
arriving at the Isle of Man at 21:05. In addition,
there will be an afternoon flight departing from the
Island at 13:55, which returns from London City at
15:45 for those requiring a shorter day in the Capital.
As well as the three daily flights on weekdays, Aer
Arann will also operate a service on Saturday mornings,
plus two flights on Sunday evenings, catering for more
leisure driven traffic.
The Aer Arann Isle of Man route will also bring
another first to London City Airport as its debuts the
72-seat ATR72-500. It will be the first of its type to
operate into London City, bringing high standards of
passenger service to the route. Aer Arann is currently
participating in a certification programme with the
manufacturer, ATR, the UK Civil Aviation Authority and
London City Airport.
The Isle of Man Airport has been working since May
to restore the schedule the Island so desperately
needs. There were a number of critical issues which
presented challenges, including the securing by Aer
Arann of London City “slots” for the route,
coupled with the current economic downturn, but both
the Airport and Aer Arann are confident about the
future of the route.
“The Isle of Man to London City route has
performed consistently well since it commenced in 2000,
carrying an average of 5,500 passengers per month
flying between the two airports in 2007,” said
Ann. “Although VLM has continued to operate its
daily service originating from London, the monthly
average has recently dropped to less than 1,000
passengers. We know that Isle of Man business and
commerce have suffered substantially without the
frequent service to London City and, despite the
economic situation, there is still heavy demand for the
route.”
Isle of Man Minister of Transport, David Anderson
MHK is delighted with the Aer Arann announcement.
“We are in no doubt whatsoever about the value of
a frequent link with London City with good timings to
meet the Island’s business needs,” he said.
“Aer Arann showed real enthusiasm for the route
and I am over the moon that they have decided to take
it up and have managed to obtain the London City
timings we all desperately need. This is a real boost
to the Island’s business travel and again helps
to make the Isle of Man the very attractive offshore
commercial centre that it is.”
DTI Minister David Cretney MHK said "The London City
route has proved to be very valuable for the Isle of
Man’s economy by providing a convenient link to
the centre of London both for our business community
and for business visitors from London and
internationally. I am delighted to see the restoration
of a frequent service to London City by Aer Arann, with
the excellent timings they have obtained, and I know
this will be enthusiastically welcomed throughout the
Island's business community."
“This new route is an example of the focus
that Aer Arann is placing on building a strong business
by developing a regional route structure that provides
critical links and access to major centres”, said
Aer Arann CEO designate, Paul Schütz.
“The schedule offers excellent access
opportunities for the business and financial services
community who need to travel frequently between the two
airports”, he continued, “and it also
offers very convenient travel times for leisure
passengers who want easy access to central London or to
the Isle of Man,”, Mr. Schütz concluded.
Due to its close proximity to London’s primary
commercial and business centre, which celebrated its
21st birthday this year together with the Docklands
Light Railway link into the airport, London City is
highly sought after for business travel to the capital.
As a result, it has been increasingly difficult for
airlines to secure good business timings for flights
into the airport. “This has been a key issue for
the restoration of the London City route for the
Island,” added Ann. “We are very pleased
that Aer Arann has obtained these London City timings
and will be working with them to ensure that they
remain available for the Isle of Man route in the
future.”

| Aer Arann announces cost
reduction programme |
20th October
- The Board of Aer Arann has announced a
further change to its business model to better position
the airline in the current difficult operating
environment for the airline industry.
This change will see an increasing concentration on
the charter and wet lease programme introduced during
the summer, and a reduction in marginal scheduled
services. These changes will be implemented on
completion of an ongoing review of the airline’s
operations.
Aer Arann’s key routes will be unaffected by
this change which is being implemented to ensure the
airline’s long-term future.
The new business model will maximise aircraft
utilisation with a core scheduled operation of 9
aircraft and additional aircraft allocated to the
charter and wet lease market. Future growth for the
foreseeable future is expected to be generated in this
market.
Currently the airline operates 12 aircraft on
scheduled services and has one aircraft on wet lease.
The airline has entered into discussions with staff
representatives on the cost reduction programme
associated with the new business model.
Regrettably, it is likely that this will lead to a
reduction in staff numbers of up to 100 people.
However, redundancies for flight crew and engineers may
reduce depending on the progressive introduction of new
charter and wet lease business.
Aer Arann is committed to taking whatever steps are
necessary to ensure the company’s viability and
long term development.
Aer Arann offers it’s thanks to all of its
loyal customers for their continued support and looks
forward to continuing to offer them a quality regional
airline service.

| Aer Arann adds Cork -
Glasgow to its network |
04th September
- Aer Arann has announced that it will serve
Cork – Glasgow (Prestwick) from 28th October
2008.
“This is an excellent opportunity for Aer
Arann to take over an existing route and develop it by
offering our unique brand of quality service”
said Fergal Barry, Aer Arann’s Commercial
Director.
“We also very happy to ensure there is no
break in service for regular customers as we introduce
a second Scottish service from Cork”, said Mr
Barry.
Kevin Cullinane, Aviation Marketing Manager at Cork
Airport, said “This is great news for Cork
Airport as we are acutely aware of the importance of
ensuring that the Munster region continues to enjoy
excellent connectivity to a key business and tourist
destination. Over the past week the business community
in Cork and the Greater Munster region has sought to
have a new service in place from the end of October
next and we are delighted that Aer Arann will provide
them and their customers with an enhanced service to
and from Glasgow as well as Edinburgh going forward. I
believe that Aer Arann is not only meeting that
requirement but exceeding it by giving our mutual
Customers quality service and enhanced connectivity to
the Scottish market while at the same time providing
direct access to the South of Ireland for our Celtic
cousins."
Mark Rodwell, Chief Executive of Glasgow Prestwick
Airport, said “We are delighted with Aer
Arann’s announcement today that they will operate
flights between Glasgow Prestwick and Cork.
“We have a strong relationship with them and
hope this new service will build on the success of
their current service to Donegal. It will maintain our
strong coverage of the Irish market, which has always
been popular with Scottish business and leisure
travellers due to the short flight times and huge
variety of attractions on offer. “Cork is not
only an ideal city break location due to the shopping
and nightlife on offer, but venture outside the city
and you will find some of Ireland’s best scenery.
County Cork is also renowned for its excellent seafood
restaurants.
“We are confident this new service will also
cater for the inbound market as Ayrshire and Glasgow
are popular destinations among the Irish with a wide
range of attractions including golf, shopping and
exciting nightlife.”

| Aer Arann awarded
Knock-Dublin route |
02nd September
- Aer Arann welcomes the announcement by the
Minister for Transport that the airline has been
awarded the Knock - Dublin PSO route.
In accordance with PSO route requirements Aer Arann
will provide a daily early morning service from Knock
to Dublin and an evening return service, beginning on
October 1st 2008.
Aer Arann had operated the Knock – Dublin PSO
route until July this year and had bid for the contract
to continue flying the route as part of the public
tender process earlier this year covering all PSO
routes. This tender process was conducted in accordance
with EU regulations.
“We’re very happy to have been awarded
this route and to return to Knock”, said Aer
Arann Managing Director Garry Cullen.
“While we were delighted to win the contracts
for four PSO routes, we were initially disappointed not
to retain the Knock route as we had developed a very
loyal customer base”, Mr. Cullen continued.
“However, we will now renew our relationship with
our business and leisure customers and we look forward
to offering them a quality and cost effective
service”.
Mr. Cullen pointed out that Aer Arann is committed
to the development of services from the regional
airports and recognises these as vital parts of the
national infrastructure.
“Direct services from the regions to major
airports such as Dublin are key to Ireland’s
economic development”, said Mr. Cullen.
“They play a vital role in providing necessary
access both for business travellers and the regional
tourism industry”, he continued.
Aer Arann’s morning flight from Knock will
depart at 0710hrs, arriving in Dublin at 0755hrs, six
days a week. The Sunday departure time from Knock will
be 0900hrs, arriving in Dublin at 0945hrs.

| Aer Arann appoints Chief
Executive Designate, Continuity Assured as Retiring CEO
Joins Board |
08th August
- The Chairman of Aer Arann, Padraig
O’Ceidigh, has announced the appointment of Paul
Schütz as the airline’s Chief Executive
Designate. He will take over as Chief Executive on
January 1st 2009, and on the same day Aer Arann’s
current CEO, Garry Cullen, will become a non executive
Board Director.
Paul Schütz joined Aer Arann in
2006 as Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary.
He has more than 18 years experience in the airline
industry including senior finance and general
management roles. He is a Management Accountant and a
member of the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants.
“These are excellent appointments
for Aer Arann because they offer both a smooth
transition period and high levels of continuity as we
continue with our development plans”, said
Padraig O’Ceidigh.
“We have known for some time that
Garry was due to retire”, he continued,
“and it was important for us to retain his
expertise on the Board and to appoint a new CEO with
the experience, ability and drive that will allow Aer
Arann to build on our success as Europe’s fastest
growing regional airline”.
Paul Schütz began his airline
industry career with Ryanair before moving to British
Airways as Finance Analyst. He went on to become
Director of Finance and Administration in Virgin
Express and then moved to BWIA West Indies Airways
initially as Chief Financial Officer and later becoming
Joint General Manager. He later joined Eirjet as
Managing Director in 2004 before he was recruited to
join Aer Arann two years later.
Paul Schütz was raised and
educated in Limerick. He is approaching his 42nd
birthday and is married with three children.
Reacting to his appointment Paul
Schütz said he was looking forward to
“leading Aer Arann’s team of talented and
committed airline professionals”.
“There is no doubt that these are
challenging times for the airline industry
globally”, he said, “but I believe we have
both the right fleet and route network to allow us to
face those challenges by building on our direct access
business model”.
“Our new ATR-72 aircraft are
highly fuel efficient”, he continued, “and
as more join the fleet they will increase our ability
to compete effectively while maintaining superior
levels of customer service”.
Both Padraig O’Ceidigh and Paul
Schütz praised outgoing Chief Executive Garry
Cullen for his outstanding contribution to Aer Arann
and to the Irish airline industry.
“It was a major coup for Aer
Arann when Garry agreed to join us as CEO almost three
years ago”, said Padraig O’Ceidigh.
“His experience as a senior airline executive
over many years, including those as Chief Executive of
both Aer Lingus and LIAT in the Caribbean, was
invaluable as we developed our route network and built
an airline that could compete successfully in the
European market”.
“Personally, I am delighted that
Garry has accepted our invitation to join the board of
Aer Arann”, he continued, “and the fact
that his knowledge and experience will continue to be
available to us augurs very well for the
future”.
Reacting to the appointment of Paul
Schütz as his successor Garry Cullen commended the
Board for their vision in appointing a “chief
executive with talent and ambition coupled with an
obvious commitment to Aer Arann and a strong desire to
lead its development as a leading European regional
carrier”.
Following the appointments by the Board
of Aer Arann Garry Cullen and Paul Schütz will
work together as Chief Executive and Chief Executive
Designate for a transition period up to the end of
2008. Paul Schütz will retain his responsibilities
as Chief Financial Officer and Company Secretary during

14th July
- Sunderland AFC’s pre-season visits to
the Republic of Ireland will once again be courtesy of
Aer Arann.
The Irish airline is the ‘Official Airline of

SAFC Chairman Niall Quinn said: “We are
delighted to be bringing Sunderland to Ireland again
with our friends at Aer Arann. A great feeling of

that.”

Aer Arann sponsored the Black Cats trip to Ireland

| Aer Arann carries record
number of passengers in the first five months of 2008
|
04th June
- Highlights from the first five months
are:
- Carried 430,100 passengers, a 3.1% increase over
the first five months of 2007
- Best ever May: 105,677 passengers carried in one
month, 10% ahead of last year
- Launched 6 new routes, including first ever jet
services to Amsterdam
- Continental Europe expansion: Aer Arann now
serves six countries: Ireland, UK, France, Holland,
Spain, and Portugal
- Strong individual route performance:
Galway-London increased by 23%, Waterford-London
increased by 11%,Waterford-Manchester increase by
42%, Dublin-Galway by 13%
- Projected growth on existing routes and the
launch of Dublin-Derry outweighing the pending
departure of the Dublin-Kerry and Dublin-Knock
routes
- Outlook for remainder 2008: June 2008 showing
18.4% increase on previous year, positive in Q3, Q4
on target so far in passenger terms
- Sterling reduction affecting yields, fuel price
increase affect costs, but protected compared to
other airlines by fuel economics of Aer Arann ATR
aircraft fleet
- Leased aircraft to FinnComm (Finnair) and
Flybe
Garry Cullen, Managing Director, Aer Arann said:
"For the first months to end May 2008, Aer Arann
carried 430,000 passengers, a 3.1% increase on the same
period last year. The month of May delivered strong
results, with 105,677 passengers carried in one month,
a 10% improvement on the same month last year, due to
the great success of Munster Rugby and an excellent
performance on Cork-Dublin route.
The underlying passenger results continue to be
strong, against a background of tough trading
conditions throughout the aviation industry. Our
international routes have registered a record growth of
10% over the same period last year.
This year we have adjusted our business model
through increasing the aircraft leasing side of the
business. This has opened up new revenue streams and
has enabled us to spread the risk during this difficult
time for the airline industry.
Our fleet replacement and expansion programme has
facilitated the leasing of spare aircraft to Finncomm
(the commuter arm of Finnair) and Flybe, whilst still
introducing our new fleet into our scheduled service.
As a result, refining Aer Arann’s strategy and
focus going forward means we can face any difficult
conditions from a position of strength.
Individual routes have shown good results based on
like for like with the first five months of 2007:
- Galway-London increase of 23%
- Waterford-London increase of 11%
- Waterford-Manchester increase of 42%
- Dublin-Galway increase of 13%
- Belfast-Cork increase of 11%
- Donegal-Glasgow increase of 12%
Aer Arann’s growth strategy focuses on connecting
the regions with direct flights. Extending the Aer
Arann footprint into continental Europe is one of the
keys to the future. Aer Arann continued to expand its
network with the announcement of six new routes to
Amsterdam, Faro, Malaga, Bordeaux, Brest and La
Rochelle in the first quarter. Aer Arann now has 16
routes to mainland Europe.
Despite the increase in fuel prices, Aer Arann is in
relatively good shape to cope with fuel costs in excess
of $130 per barrel. Whilst fuel prices are something we
have no control over, our fuel hedging strategy and
fuel-efficient aircraft have protected us. Our greatest
advantage is that our aircraft, the ATR 72 and 42
aircraft, have the best fuel economics in the airline
industry. Our ATR aircraft use 70% less fuel
consumption than a jet on similar routes, and use as
much fuel flying 370 kilometers (230 miles) as a Boeing
747 consumes in 10 minutes of taxiing. As a result, Aer
Arann is better insulated from the fuel price spike
than other airlines.

Forget the price of oil, Aer Arann is still offering
great deals on summer flights as Aer Arann already has
the most fuel efficient and greenest fleet in Ireland.
A typical Aer Arann flight uses 70% less fuel than a
jet on similar routes. Our fleet of ATRs uses as much
fuel on a typical sector as a Boeing 747 uses in ten
minutes of taxiing.
Said Colin Lewis, Head of Sales and Marketing at Aer
Arann: ‘We are also lightening the load for
customers this summer by refusing to sting them with
hidden baggage or check-in charges. Other so called
low-cost competitors charge extra for baggage or
checking in at the airport, with anything between
£8-100 depending on the nature of the luggage or

| Love is in the aer with Aer
Arann |
14th Feb
- Leap over to Ireland with Aer Arann’s
top romantic destinations
Aer Arann, one of Europe’s fastest growing
regional airlines, encourages all women; brave enough
to propose on 29 February this leap year, to think
Ireland as the place to pop the question for 2008. From
lush green landscapes and ancient castles to bustling
cities and sparkling coastlines, Ireland offers
romance, intrigue and breathtaking opportunities. For
proposals, weddings or honeymoons leap over to Ireland
and fall in love with its striking cities including
Sligo, Galway and Waterford.
The Place of Shells
The adventure minded romantic should head straight to
Sligo; its nearby beaches offer some of the best
surfing around and the beautiful sunsets will provide
the ideal romantic backdrop for a proposal. To woo your
man whisk him away to one of the many golf clubs or try
a shellfish dinner in town as Sligo literally
translates as ‘the place of shells’.
Rugged Romance
Be blown away by Galway and its rugged coastlines or
hop over to the nearby Aran Islands. The bustling city
of Galway is home to the famous Galway races and Oyster
festival and is the nearest city to one of the most
romantic dwellings in Ireland. Ashford Castle was the
venue of choice for Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye
Smith when they tied the knot. The castle has over 350
acres of beautiful wooded parkland, lakes for fishing,
a falconry and a health and beauty spa. This is the
ultimate venue for leap day proposals.
Crystal Clear
Waterford, famous for its crystal, has a medieval
flavour having been established in Viking times. Its
cobbled streets and active marina are perfect for
romantic walks and the city is surrounded by dramatic
mountain scenery. The nearby beaches have an exotic
feel to them, ideal if you fancy returning for a beach
wedding.

| Aer Arann Announces Record
Growth In 2007 |
28th Jan
- Ireland ’s regional airline continues
to gain momentum in Irish, UK and French markets,
generating record numbers in major airports, gaining
market share in the UK and successfully initiating its
fleet replacement programme with the ATR 72-500
‘Green Machine’. The management team
is poised for continued growth in 2008, with the
following highlights:
- Record growth
- Turnover in excess of €100 million per
annum, a 6% increase over 2006
- Passenger numbers in excess of 1.15 million, a
10% increase over 2006
- 600 flights per week across 40 routes in Ireland,
UK and France
- Outlook strong: high load factors and continued
growth in 2008
New routes - 2007
Aer Arann continued to expand its network at a rapid
rate in 2007 with the announcement of six new regional
routes from Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle and
Birmingham. Fergal Barry, Commercial Director with Aer
Arann commented: “Our growth strategy is focused
on improving connectivity from the regions whilst
providing exemplary customer service. Our new
routes have allowed Aer Arann to broaden its customer
base from visiting friends and relatives traffic to the
wider UK leisure and business customer. Our new routes
in 2007 surpassed our expectations and we expect our
2008 new routes to yield similar success.”
Record Traffic
In the year ending December 2007, Aer Arann carried in
excess of 1.15m passengers, the highest figure recorded
to date and an increase of 9900% from 12,000 passengers
in 1999. This is also a considerable achievement given
that Aer Arann only commenced regular scheduled traffic
in 1998.
In 2007, the Dublin Airport Authority announced that
Aer Arann was the third largest operator into Dublin
Airport, carrying almost 800,000 passengers through the
airport in one year. Aer Arann is now bigger than Air
France, SAS, BA, Cityjet, Lufthansa, Delta, Iberia and
Continental at Dublin Airport based on official
passenger numbers published by the Dublin Airport
Authority.
Aer Arann passenger figures reached an all time high
in August 2007 where the airline carried 135,000
passengers in one month. The airline achieved an
unprecedented 100% load factor for the bank holiday
weekend in October 2007 on all our international
routes.
In 2007, Aer Arann invested heavily in the UK market
with a €1m campaign to raise awareness. Aer
Arann’s numbers ex-UK has increased by almost 3%
as a percentage of overall sales.
The Galway-London route moved 20% ahead of 2006.
Increased passenger demand meant that Aer Arann
increased frequency on this route to three flights a
day – every day. Galway - London broke the 9,000
per month passenger barrier in August 2007, and is
going from strength to strength. The Waterford - London
route achieved 9,000 passengers per month by the third
quarter. The new base in Waterford allowed Aer Arann to
offer and improved schedule and new routes in the form
of Waterford-Birmingham, which has proved a resounding
success.
New fleet
As part of a £128 million investment, Aer Arann
welcomed two of the ten ATR 72-500 ordered in May 2006.
The new ATR 72-500 is the first of ten new aircraft to
be delivered over the next two years. By 2009, all of
the Aer Arann fleet will be brand new. The ATR 72-500
offers Aer Arann customers new levels of comfort and
efficiency. Several factors combine to make the ATR an
environmentally friendly aircraft: lower emissions of
CO2 due to reduced fuel burn, 70% lower fuel
consumption than a jet on similar routes, and new
standards in the industry for quietness. The new
aircraft has resulted in much improved customer
experience, reliability and operational economics.
New base, new hangar
During May 2007, Aer Arann announced major expansion
from Waterford airport through the opening of a new
base with the creation of 45 new jobs. This is the
fourth base Aer Arann has in Ireland adding to those in
Dublin, Cork and Galway.
In June 2007, Aer Arann and Galway Airport announced
the creation of 30 new jobs as result of a major
expansion at the airport. A new purpose built hangar
was built at Galway airport, which will house a new
engineering base for Aer Arann. The new hangar and
engineering base carries out most of its maintenance
requirements for the airline.
Management Team
2007 was marked not only by excellent commercial
progress, but also by considerable strengthening of the
management teams. Aer Arann has been able to attract
further high calibre management and staff. These
appointments will strengthen the existing team and
drive the Company's next phase of growth and planned
internationalisation:
Notable appointments over the past year have been:
- Paul Schutz, Finance Director. Previously, Paul
held senior finance roles with Ryanair, BWIA,
Virgin Express and Eirjet.
- Fergal Barry, Commercial Director - former
Finance Director, Aer Arann.
- Mick Conlon, Head of Engineering – former
Engineering Manager, Aer Arann, and has held
engineering roles in Ryanair, Qantas and the Irish
AirCorps.
Ground handling savings
In May 2007, Aer Arann conducted a review of its ground
handling operation in Dublin Airport. As a result, Aer
Arann decided to transfer its check-in, boarding,
dispatch and baggage tracing functions to Sky Handling
during June. This resulted in significant cost
savings for the airline, while maintaining high
standards of service for our customers.
Aer Arann Policy on Green Issues
In 2007, many accusations were levelled against the
airline industry and its effects on the environment.
Aer Arann is committed to the principles of energy
efficiency. In 2007, Aer Arann implemented specific
policies, which both counter common industry practice
and tackles public perceptions of the aviation industry
being a significant contributor to global warming
compared to other large polluter:
- Aer Arann believes consumers should have an
environmental conscience when choosing how they
travel and this will encourage the transport
industry to become more environmentally
accountable.
- Aircraft emissions are just 3% of EU CO2
emissions, according to EU. Secondly, Regional
airlines - passenger airline services which provide
services to smaller communities, account for just
12% of carbon dioxide attributed to airline
emissions.
- Air taxation is not an effective way to tackle
environmental issues, for example, the UK
APD. Aer Arann believe that investment in
technology by the transport industry is a more
productive route, reducing the impact of transport
without inhibiting travel
- The ability of regional airlines with turboprop
engines, such as Aer Arann, to operate at lower
altitudes means the ozone layer and upper
atmosphere remain unaffected by them. Flying
at lower altitudes also saves fuel and is less
harmful to the environment.
For example: from Dublin to Cardiff, the distance is
300 kilometres or 163 nautical miles, Aer Arann’s
ATRs consume around 550 kilos of fuel. A jet such as a
Boeing 737-800 on the same route uses most of the fuel
just for take-off - often using a ton of fuel just to
reach cruising level. It takes three Aer Arann flights
from Cardiff use the same amount of fuel as a Boeing
737 uses in one flight.
Aer Arann commissions new aircraft
livery
To coincide with the arrival of the new aircraft, a new
livery was commissioned. Inspired by Celtic
rings, or triskels, from the ancient monuments at
Newgrange in County Meath, DesignCorp have
reinterpreted the traditional patterns and given them a
modern and playful twist. The colour scheme
incorporates refreshed and updated corporate colours,
giving the aircraft a distinctive look.
Charter services
Aer Arann has also seen an increase in its charter
services. The airline’s fleet of ATR
aircraft of 72 and 50 seater aircraft offer the ideal
number of seats for groups. The total number of
passengers using Aer Arann's charter services totalled
198,000 in 2007. This includes both charter flights and
wet lease flights. Aer Arann's prestigious client list
included IRFU, Welsh Rugby Union, Munster, Leinster
andConnacht Rugby, Sunderland Football Club, Kerry GAA,
Galway United and the drivers and teams of the Rally
Ireland round of the World Rally Championship.
Commenting Managing Director Garry
Cullen said:
"2007 confirmed our expectations of strong growth,
despite increased competition across all routes. Aer
Arann's success is grounded on having the right
management to maintain our momentum. 2008 will be
a very exciting time for the airline, with considerable
effort focussed on our franchise routes to Amsterdam,
Bordeaux, Malaga and Faro, and extending the Aer Arann
footprint into Europe."
